A Beginner's Guide to Making a Wiki

So, you want to make a wiki. I've been there too. In fact, I'm there right now. Here's my recommended guide:

1. Do NOT use Fandom/Wikia.

I know it can be tempting because they are cheap and have a wide and expansive amount on content, but in exchange nothing you make will be readable in the slightest. Fandom is known to be an ad-filled hellscape for a reason, and it is a better experience for any users, and is only slightly more work to use anything else.

2. Find a wiki template.

This step is pretty self-explanitory. If you're trying to make a wiki in the same style of Wikipedia, several places online have wiki templates available to use for free, and all you have to do is copy and paste the HTML code into your page and add your own text. Probably the best place one is this one.

3. Use a text editor.

Honestly, this one isn't necessary. I'm just writing everything down by hand, but it would be significantly easier if you used one. I'd recommend either Brackets or Notepad+. They make it so you won't have to directly edit the HTML code to write down your info. A LOT easier than what I'm doing (writing things down directly into the code.)

4. Use Neocities to host your wiki.

If you're here, that should be obvious, but Neocities is fanastic for hosting websites. I needed to find it, which is why I include this, but I'd heavily recommend using Neocities. A lot of wiki hosters have more strict rules on what they'll host, so they can take forever to approve your request, and especially if its more informal, they can take it down as they please. Neocities is a lot more informal. They're also cheaper for more utlitiy. I'd say most people will only need the free tier, which is great.

Final Advice

  • I'd make sure you either have some HTML experience or are willing to learn. I have a set of resources here if you have minimal knowledge or would like a touch up. It has the basics and fun graphics to spiff things up if you want to use it.
  • Get good at being patient. This is going to take a lot of time. The work won't end until you want it to, but it definitely won't end overnight. Prepare to spend months working on writing everything down.
  • I know I said free Neocities is good (and it is,) but also consider donating. You get significantly more storage and bandwith, and its only $5 a month. It also helps keep a fanastic resource alive for anyone who want to use it.

This was written mostly based on my own experience and using this Tumblr post. I'd ask OP if I could use basically point-for-point their work, except they're not active anymore and realistically the only person using this wiki is me. If this finds OP, sorry and also thank you, this is why I finally started this project.
