  • Movie Reviews

  • It's a Very Muppet Christmas Movie
  • 3/10. God awful. I had to stop halfway because it filled me with such intense sadness from how disappointing it was. I'd rewatch it to get a more specific review, but I can't stand 1 more minute of this slop.

  • Megamind
  • 7/10. Very comfortable. The soundtrack is just great, a mash-up of some classic dad rock. I love a story about a bad guy turning good. Points off because I cannot stand that Roxanne takes Megamind back at the end without addressing the fact that he lied to her for monthes, and was not planning on revealing the truth.

  • Mamma Mia!
  • 9/10. I don't care how this movie has aged. It's pure gold. The perfect comfort movie. I cried several times the first time I watched it. I'm just a sucker for a story about a mother's love. Add in the found-ish family aspects with Sophie's 3 dads, and it's an instant killer for me.

  • Calamity Jane
  • 4/10. This movie is complicated. I'd say it's a great movie to watch with a gaggle of gay people who want to riff on a weird movie. It's got a lot of weird and bad opinions on women, and the clearly lesbian main character gets with a guy who tries to "tame her." I loved the music though.

  • Bluey Seasons 1-3
  • 7/10. I know I'm a grown adult, but I do like Bluey. It's a nice silly background noise show for when I'm working on writing music or knitting.

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • 8/10. I will say, this is NOT a movie I'd recommend to everyone. There's a lot of extreme themes (rape mostly,) and a song with a large amount of trans slurs, but I think if you can emotionally handle the dark and offensive themes, it's a fantasic movie. It is a campy horror with some of the best songs from musicals (in my opinon.) Again, I would recommend at a minimum watching it with someone else who's seen it before if you are watching it for the first time, because there are a lot of triggering themes.

  • The Princess Bride
  • 10/10. What can I say that hasn't been said before? A genuine masterpiece. It's witty, campy, and guaranteed to lift your mood. I rarely enjoy media with straight romances, but this is one of the major exceptions.

  • The Muppets (2011)
  • 6/10. This was when I think the Muppets started to come back around after being bought by Disney. I don't love Walter, but I'm willing to accept him for the sake of the story his presence allows. It's humorous, silly, and generally a good watch for if you're with a group of friends. I know personally it works great for events with trans young adults.

  • Muppets From Space
  • 7/10. It's good, but nowhere near my favorite Muppet movie. It has what is clearly supposed to be a trans allegory with Gonzo feeling like he's different from everyone else. It has a beautiful ending, and it very funny (unsurprisingly, for a Muppet movie.) My cats love this one.

  • Labyrinth
  • 8/10. Awooga. I LOVE David Bowie in this, for the same reason I LOVE Howl from Howl's Moving Castle. He's handsome and wears dumb weird clothes. It's a beautiful coming-of-age story, with a touch of the typical Jim Henson magic. Decent music, though at the moment, the only song I can think of from it is Magic Dance.

  • Robots (2005)
  • 5/10. The wife's favorite movie. It's fine. I enjoy the themes, and I could never truly hate an anti-capitalism movie, but it doesn't enrapture me like some of the other movies on the list. It is decently funny. Robin Williams doesn't have a truly bad performance, and this is about a typical performance from him.

  • The Muppet Christmas Carol
  • 10/10. I well and truly do NOT care if this is a Christmas Movie. I WILL play it all year, and if someone has a problem with that, they can go to a different house. It's wonderful. It's got EXTREMELY early 90's effects, it's hilarous, it's got a lot of heart, the music is great, and it has Gonzo. What more could one want from a movie?

  • The Lego Batman
  • 6/10. It's pretty good. It's got some not-at-all-subtle gay themes, decent music, and it's funny. It also have a lot of Easter eggs for Batman fans. I just find it to be a bit overstimulating.

  • Howl's Moving Castle
  • 9/10. Good God I LOVE this movie. Its got a sweet romance between 2 stubborn assholes, and the usual Ghibli charm and beauty. I will say, while this is one of my favorite movies of all time, I do love the book even more. It ups the stubborn asshole-ness of Howl and Sophie, which makes me find them even more endearing.

  • The Muppet Movie
  • 10/10. My favorite movie. It's just dripping with Jim Henson charm, it's hilarous, and it's got beautiful music. An all-time classic. It's got one real flaw though: halfway through the movie, there's a song called "I Hope That Something Better Comes Along" which is, without a doubt, one of the most misognistic songs I have ever heard. If you ever wanted to hear Kermit say "you can't live with them, you can't live without them." listen to it.
